چکیده

3D printing opens up an inexpensive, rapid, and versatile path to the fabrication of optical elements suited to the terahertz regime. The transmission of the plastics used in 3D printers, while generally decreasing with frequency, is usable over the range 0.1-2 THz. We have designed, fabricated, and tested regular and blazed gratings and aspherical lenses for operation at terahertz frequencies. We find that the measured performance matches our theoretical predictions. Disciplines Engineering | Science and Technology Studies Publication Details Squires, A. D., Constable, E. & Lewis, R. A. Time-domain differentiation of terahertz pulses.

We report on the time-domain differentiation of light waves by metallic transmission gratings. Time-resolved terahertz experiments show that the first time derivative of an arbitrary waveform can be achieved by use of gratings of subwavelength period. The results are in accord with classical diffraction theory and may permit novel applications for tailoring few-cycle light pulses and ultrahigh-...

Response of grating pairs to single-cycle electromagnetic pulses

The chirp of single-cycle microwave fields after interaction with pairs of parallel diffraction gratings is measured in a phase-sensitive terahertz spectrometer. Novel transmission grating pairs recently proposed by Tournois, which combine diffraction and refraction effects, yield an almost linear group delay over a bandwidth that exceeds that of conventional reflection gratings by a factor of ...

Metallic Strip Gratings in the Sub-Subwavelength Regime

Metallic strip gratings (MSG) have different applications, ranging from printed circuits to filters in microwave domains. When they are under the influence of an electromagnetic field, evanescent and/or abnormal modes appear in the region between the traces, their utilization leading to the development of new electromagnetic nondestructive evaluation methods. This paper studies the behavior of ...

Performance Comparison of Ultra-Miniature Diffraction Gratings with Lenses and Zone Plates

A new class of ultra-miniature diffraction gratings has been recently proposed [1]. These gratings impose phase antisymmetry on the incoming wavefront effectively producing optical nulls which enable them to exhibit relatively constant response across wavelengths as well as insensitivity to manufactured grating thickness [2]. Hardware verification of these tiny gratings (on the scale of μm) has...

Diffraction Optical Elements and Optical Systems with a High Power Monochromatic Terahertz Source *

We have developed reflective diffraction optical elements (DOE) for focusing radiation of terahertz free electron lasers (FEL). Metal-dielectric Fresnel zone plates and metallic kinoform “lenses” were fabricated and tested using FEL radiation. A microbolometer camera (see the paper by Esaev et al. at this conference) sensitive to THz radiation had been applied for recording both terahertz beam ...
